SUN Mission Statement:

SUN consists of a dedicated team of individuals operating as a

non-partisan, non-profit society.

SUN was established to provide a venue for discussion and united

action on the needs, concerns and challenges that affect all persons,

as they grow older.

SUN shall develop proposals in response to these needs,

concerns and challenges, and advocate for their inclusion

into legislative proposals and policy.

Overview:

SUN stands for Alberta Seniors United Now Society and is registered under the

Alberta Societies Act (#5010654069).

SUN is a non-profit, non-partisan organization created to enable ALL seniors in

Alberta to participate in the well being of the province.

SUN is committed to being a contributing part of the changes necessary to meet

the dynamics of a growing and changing senior population.

collective voice heard.

The members of the Alberta Seniors United Now Society are convinced that it is

Issues SUN is currently working on

1.                  Health Care – we believe that under no circumstance can responsibility for

or authority over health care be placed in the hands of private enterprise.

2.                  Supportive and Continuing Care – must include a certainty of standards and    monitoring, and provide confidence that compliance will be enforced.

3.                  Increase of qualifying income levels for Senior Benefits.

4.                  Establishment of an Independent Seniors Advocate

5.                  Seniors Transportation

6.                  Seniors Housing

7.                  Government supplement to offset increased natural gas and electrical costs.

8.                  Restoration of Property Tax Credit program for seniors.

9.                  Restoration of vital extended health care benefits.

SUN believes that our greatest contribution has been to give hope and thereby increase    involvement by individual seniors and other seniors’ organizations.

SUN is committed to cooperating with and supporting other seniors’ organizations.               Together we can influence decisions affecting the quality of life for all Albertans’ as they grow   older.  The reality is that if you are not one of these families today you most likely will be     tomorrow. We urge all individuals to become familiar with these organizations.                             Find one that best represents your interests.  Become a member and participate.

There are hundreds of seniors’ organizations throughout the province. Many if not most are        social or recreational in nature, while others are involved in providing information and services.         A few are heavily involved in advocacy actions.  Most if not all are non-profit organizations           and exist because of the passion and commitment of their members and volunteers. They do wonderful things.  Yet, we believe there is a concern.  The concern is that though there are over 330,000 Albertans aged 65+ and approximately 275,000 aged 55-64 the number of persons        who participate and support seniors organizations represents a small percentage of these numbers.
