16-Dec-11 Some Relief From City of Edmonton Increasing Taxes

The City of Edmonton property tax and utility fee increases will cost approximately $180.00 more per year. These regressive taxes will clearly affect seniors on low or fixed incomes.

16-Dec-11 Seniors Property Tax Relief Coming Soon?

We are confident common sense will prevail and the recently introduced Seniors Property Tax Deferment Act, which Seniors United Now has been advocating for since 2009, will be passed.

23-Nov-11 Seniors at Risk in Alberta Long Term Care Facilities

Alberta Seniors United Now, a non-profit, non-partisan organization that advocates on behalf of seniors is appalled that Alberta Health Services have not been able to establish a uniform province wide inspection system for Alberta long-term care facilities during the last six years.  Auditor General, Merwan Saher, on Tuesday said that each Alberta health services zone continues to use" different inspection tools and methods"

16-Mar-11 Seniors Deserve Better in Health Care

Alberta Seniors United Now, a non profit, non partisan organization that advocates on behalf of seniors is extremely concerned with the direction of Health Care for Seniors outlined in the Alberta 5 year Health Action Plan.

19-Nov-10 Seniors Deserve Better Then To Be Stored in a Lounge

The proposal to “ Move stable seniors, who are in emergency stretchers but no longer need  acute care, into waiting rooms or lounges in continuing care facilities – even if all those beds are filled – when the emergency ward is jam-packed and access to care is being blocked “ totally devalues the seniors of this province. Once again, this government and Alberta Health Services(AHS)believes that it is acceptable to move seniors around without any consideration for their discomfort, level of anxiety, or state of confusion. This is totally unacceptable.

14-Jan-10 Alberta seniors look for opportunities to consult with new cabinet team

Across the province,  more and more seniors are hoping that the provincial government will consult with, listen to, and consider their opinions; and are sending out this message as the new cabinet team, announced recently, start to become familiar with their respective portfolios.

SUN Vice-President, Richard Tansey says ‘this can be accomplished, with good communication strategies, concrete plans, evaluation methods, and follow-up, [especially as it relates to decisions that impact the health and well-being of seniors].’

30-Dec-09 Alberta seniors are truly afraid…

Locally...Not just one, but close to 200 seniors, from around the province, added their thoughts and comments as they responded to a 20-question mail-in survey.  Average age of respondents (64%) was 72-84 years.  Participants were asked to expand on their personal experiences with the healthcare system, wait lists, deregulation, and housing for seniors needing medical care.

20-Dec-09 Alberta seniors express the circumstances…

Locally...Over 250 seniors, from around the province, recently responded to a three-question survey wherein they were asked to expand on their personal experiences with the healthcare system, transportation, home maintenance/renovations/modifications.

19-Aug-09 What is it really about? It’s not about talking slower, or louder.

With all the Town Hall meetings, Public Forums, Survey’s, Breakout Groups, and Task Force initiatives, one would think that the Government (of the day) has had ample opportunities to ‘get it right’.

But what exactly are they trying to get… or more poignantly, ‘why haven’t they’ (gotten it right)? Perhaps in reality it is our local politicians, and not the seniors, who need to be spoken to more slowly… perhaps we have yet to raise our voices loud enough (to be heard).
