SENIORS ARE WAITING Sept 27/05
The following communication was forwarded to Premier Klein and Members of Caucus. All Alberta awaits advice of a strategy for the future.
Premier Klein and Members of Caucus:
SENIORS UNITED NOW is a non-profit, membership driven organization whose vision is to be a leading advocate and resource on seniors issues. As you go into your retreat this weekend to consider the best distribution of the current Alberta wealth we ask that you give central attention to the situation currently faced by so many seniors in this province. We speak on behalf of the 6000 plus participating seniors, members and supporters of SUN, as well as seniors all over the province who are still awaiting the restoration of the benefits taken away in the early 1990's. The rate of increase in the cost of living and the resultant uncontrollable expenses faced by those on a fixed income is causing distress and desperation for so many. Seniors are not in a position to change their circumstances by seeking an increase in wages, downsizing, taking care of their own repairs and maintenance. They may need increasing support from physiotherapy to stay healthy and mobile, but this is also being denied with the several cuts to this service. Unless one is at the very lowest end of the income scale, dental and eye care are not within their budgets, putting their physical, emotional and social wellbeing at risk. Those lucky enough to still have some savings are fearful as they watch it being depleted at a rate that bodes ill for the future. Promises made earlier have failed to materialize. Seniors are losing their homes, their hope and their trust as they watch the bounty of a prosperous province once again elude them. Those who have contributed so much to make Alberta the flourishing province that it is today deserve better. They have been betrayed and deprived of the benefits that they anticipated in their latter years. This weekend, we ask that seniors be given the priority that they deserve.
Ireen Slater, SUN Vice President/Chair of the St. Albert Chapter, and
Ron Ellis, SUN Executive Director.
