SUN PRAISES SENIORS’ ORGANIZATIONS
By Ron Ellis – Executive Director of SUN
There are hundreds of seniors’ organizations throughout the province. Many if not most are social or recreational in nature, while others are involved in providing information and services. A few are heavily involved in advocacy actions. Most if not all are non-profit organizations and exist because of the passion and commitment of members and volunteers. They do wonderful things. Yet, I believe there is a concern. The concern is that though there are 330,000 Albertans aged 65 + and approximately 275,000 aged 55 to 64 the number of persons who participate and support these organizations represents a small percentage of these numbers. I think there are some basic truths in life and the following are two that apply to this concern. “Use it or lose it” and “You never miss it until it is gone”. SUN urges all individuals to become familiar with these organizations. Find one that best represents your interests. Become a member and participate.
SUN is committed to cooperating and supporting other seniors’ organizations. Together we can influence decisions affecting the quality of life for all Albertans as they grow older. The reality is that most of the work done by these organizations has an affect on many if not most families. The reality is that if you are not one of these families today you most likely will be tomorrow.
The vision of SUN is to be a leading resource and advocate on senior’s issues. SUN invites you to visit our web site www.seniorsunitenow.ca or to contact our office directly at 780.449.1816 - email unitenow@telus.net.
